For Hindus, no place is more charged than the banks of the Ganges. Varanasi — also called Kashi or Banaras — is believed to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, a place where pilgrims come to bathe at the ghats at dawn and where the evening Ganga aarti, with its lamps and chanting, draws thousands to the waterside. Around it lie other deeply sacred sites: Ayodhya, revered as the birthplace of Lord Rama; Prayagraj (Allahabad), where the Ganges and Yamuna meet at the Sangam; and Gaya and Chitrakoot, woven into the great epics and rites of the faith.

For Buddhists, India and its neighbours hold the four defining places of the Buddha's life, and our Buddhist circuit links them into one journey. Bodhgaya, where he attained enlightenment beneath the Bodhi tree, is marked by the soaring Mahabodhi Temple; Sarnath, near Varanasi, is where he preached his first sermon; and Rajgir, Nalanda and Patna trace the world of early Buddhism, including the ruins of Nalanda, one of the oldest universities in the world. Timing follows the northern plains: October to March is the most comfortable season for the Ganges towns and the Buddhist circuit, with cool, clear days ideal for the early-morning rituals that these places are famous for.
